There were early reported failures of the clip on handle bars as fitted to the 650 Sport, 668 and similar style bikes. These are manifested as sudden and total failure of the V shaped joint at the stem of the bar and the bar itself. This could be unsettling at best and catastrophic at worst, so the factor issued a recall/upgrade bulletin. The service action required was to weld a small triangular shapped gusset to the top of the joint, thereby strengthening it and eliminating the cause of the failure. It isn't really noticeable on my bike, as the bars are painted black anyway.
If your bike has not had this modification performed it is highly recommended that you get it done. Given the sudden nature of the way this fatigue fracture occurs, you really don't want it to happen in the middle of your favourite piece of twisting mountain road!
